Good VR3 VRBCS300W Wireless Back-Up Camera with 2.5" LCD Monitor

Over All Rating Reviews :
The ``Wireless Backup Camera System'' is not what you think.

When it arrived at my house, I thought it was yet another way to back up -- or save a copy of -- the photos on a digital camera.

But it's actually a device for helping drivers back up a car, van or truck -- without hitting anything. The system consists of a small camera that you mount on the back of the vehicle and a good clear color screen that you place on your visor or dashboard. Once installed, you can see objects behind your car that you might miss if you just rely on your mirror or even looking over your shoulder.

The nice thing about the system, aside from the reasonable under-$150 price, is that it's quite easy to install. The wireless connection between the camera and the screen means you don't have to run a wire from one end of the car to another.

Of course, both the camera and screen need a power source. The screen plugs into the cigarette lighter and comes with a mounting bracket for the top of dash. The camera cleverly attaches to your license plate mounting bracket -- it took me less than two minutes to screw it in place.

I installed the monitor and camera in my Husbands truck and tested it by backing out of my driveway, parallel parking and backing up in a parking lot. It's by no means a substitute for looking over your shoulder or using the rearview mirror, but if properly mounted, it does let you see things you might otherwise miss: a tricycle, a small animal or even a small child.

The camera hookup wire and the size of the terminal connectors are incompatible and took more time and effort to make a propper connection to the backup lite circuitry.

Update 3/13/08 - ALSO wasted my money ($20) on the proprietary cord they sent me. it does not come with a separate power supply line, so it is basically useless! the tiny lcd monitor only has one connector, and it is for power only, not for signal transmission! inside the lcd is the receiver with a 2-inch, 16-guage wire antenna. the transmitter is a 1 foot, 18-guage wire in the camera cable and is covered by tough plastic. so, there is no easy way to use the cord to connect the transmitter to the receiver!!!! aaaahhhhhhhhh!! bad customer service to tell me that it will work!!

Note: there are $50 cheaper prices for the same thing on Amazon...do a search to see other reviews...this company's product has multiple postings!!

Lowest Price VR3 VRBCS300W Wireless Back-Up Camera with 2.5" LCD Monitor

Over All Rating Reviews :
First, this camera system is fraction of the cost of any other on the market, so you can't expect it to be perfect. I found the installation to be simple on the back of our 29 foot winnebago, and the reception on the camera is great. It takes a few seconds for the image to complete, and there is some flicker on occasion, but for the most part, I have had no problems with this. We recently went on a 3500 mile trip with this and found it to be very useful and reliable. We are buying a second one for our car. If you want higher quality, you will spend $400-500 minimum for other systems on the market. You do get what you pay for, but I have been happy with mine.

Previous reviewer neglected to mention that there are wires that must be connected to the reverse wires of your vehicle!!!

Even the product comment spells that out. So while this camera is a good price and does what it says it does, it is not totally wireless and you must connect wires to the wires of your vehicle. It's not as easy as just plugging in an MP3 player into the cigarette lighter socket!!!

I purchased one of these cameras and it was junk. I installed it on a hot day, and before the day was over the camera was so fogged up you couldn't see anything on the screen. Mind you it just came out of the box and had not even been rained on yet and the inside lens of the camera was totally covered in condensation. customer service never got back to me from an email, and put you on hold until you finally give up (30 minutes twice). And they did get my email, a bot sent me a conformation of that.

Last Minute VR3 VRBCS300W Wireless Back-Up Camera with 2.5" LCD Monitor

Over All Rating Reviews :
This is the worst item I have purchased for my truck. The picture comes on very slow, the interferance gets so bad you can't see the picture on the monitor, the monitor flashes at night when the camera is not on. I contacted support and they ask me to test it in a remote area. So it works good in a remote area but 99% of the time it will be used in the city. The thing is worthless and I sent it back to the company.

I bought this to install on the rear of my 31'fifth wh. camper. It didn't work wireless so I bought 75' of cable and that didn't work either. After several attempts to contact the service I finaly spoke to a "person". He said the mod. 300 camera wouldn't work and he would send a mod. 330. This took 3 months with lots of calls and when I hooked it up and it still doesn't work. Works fine on the rear of my car wireless.Poor serv ice and forget the web site help service. Mike Rumsey

VR3 VRBCS300W Wireless Back-Up Camera with 2.5" LCD Monitor Top Quality

Over All Rating Reviews :
Purchased as a gift for my mom who really loves it. The installation was much more involved than we were led to believe and is better left to a professional installer which runs another $50-$60 dollars. But the money saved on the unit made up for it. The picture is clear and it works great. All in all a good deal for the price.

Over All Rating Reviews :
This is a good camera IF when I first recived this I had one in use on a different vecial this was for my doge 1500. Well the distance from the back of the truck to dash was to far and the signal cut out for several minets at a time, But this camera can be wired directly so bought the 25ft cable and installed in about 1hr. Now the camera is just fine better view when you hard wire, so I would say to get the wire and save time on a small car it works wireless on a mid size car to trucks hard wire it also like fact you can roate the camera my coverage area is apx 15ft back and 8ft wide then it gets a little fuzzy

Price VR3 VRBCS300W Wireless Back-Up Camera with 2.5" LCD Monitor

Over All Rating Reviews :
My pickup is hard to see behind me when driving or backing. I purchased this to allow seeing behind me at all times.

I slightly modified installation procedures.

Instead of connecting to my backup lights (meaning it is only powered when the vehicle is in reverse), I routed the power cable along the bottom of the truck, ensuring it could not become pinched in the undercarriage, leaf springs, etc and ran it into the cab.

I then hardwired it into the power system of the truck (instead of using the cigarette lighter for powering).

It works well most of the time. However, even though it is listed as wireless, you must supply power to the unit with a cable. The signal is obtained through wireless means which also equates to interference.

I found that more populated areas tended to produce more interference. Living rural, it isn't that much of a problem.

The image is surprisingly clear for the size.

It definitely allows for better than nothing views when backing, but remember that nothing beats a good look around before moving. Do not depend entirely on this to determine safety in moving.

It will show if anyone is directly behind your vehicle, including children.

Mine stays powered while driving and gives adequate performance giving the price and the size.

If you are looking for something highly detailed, this will not suit you, but it does allow a good look around. Just remember, "objects in camera are closer than they appear."

The camera also allows for rotation of the image so mounting with the mount up or down can be allowed for.

Adjustment of brightness/contrast is done with one button. Push it multiple times to make predetermined changes and select the one you like the most.

All in all, this device does what I want it to do but may not be for everyone.

I am extremely disappointed in the reception. The screen constantly is jumping back and forth that I can't even see anything when I back up. Of course, I returned it. However, I already drilled a hole in my trunk to install the camera and now I am stuck with a hole in my car. I feel so regretful purchasing this useless unit.

Where To Buy VR3 VRBCS300W Wireless Back-Up Camera with 2.5" LCD Monitor

Over All Rating Reviews :
I just finished installing this product on my 2006 Honda Odyssey. Several points to share...

1. This product does what everyone thinks it should do--provide a basic back-up camera to your vehicle, with wireless transmission between monitor and camera.

2. The marketing slogans on the package is absolutely misleading. "Installls As Easy as 1... 2... 3..." means prepare yourself for a major 6-hour project (see details below) "No Holes to Drill" means 3 steps of the installation procedure addresses drilling holes on your vehicle, (potentially). The picture of the camera mounting on the visor? No way!!!

3. Here is my installation diary--

Monitor installation--Moderately easy
The manual requires you to "see vehicle's owner's manual for fuse box diagram," if you decide not to do use the cigarette lighter. I wanted to leave it for cell phone chargers so fuse box is the approach I took. Thanks to detailed descriptions in the Honda manual, +12V was connected to a slot not used and the original fuse was used to keep the wire in place. Get your radio code ready, Honda owner, since you will need to unplug the cathode of the battery.

Camera installation--slightly hard
The biggest hurdle for me to install the camera is about how to open up the tailgate area of my Odyssey. After some prying of panels and internet searching to no avail, I decided to order a $75 Honda service manual so that I do not damage my wife's van. A week later (today) book arrived and it showed me exactly how to open up the tailgate panels correctly. If I do not have this book there is no way I can install this camera even if I drill a hole. Now for Odyssey I found a niche right behind the license plate that I can pass the camera wire through, by replacing an original fastener clip. Camera wire would be routed from above the plate to this through hole. Odyssey does not have license plate threads at the bottom of the plate otherwise external wire routing would be easier. Anyway the point is that you will have to find the best way to install the camera for your own vehicle. Next which power source should I need to connect? I do not want to use the reverse light since that means during a parallel parking when I drive forward the reverse light and therefore camera would be off. I debated with my wife if the license plate light would be a better one, but eventually decided to use the extra +12 lighter socket in the back of the van. I cut the redundant lighter plug (for the monitor) and crimped the wires. These wires are therefore visible inside the vehicle and held in place by Velcro stickers.

So here is my summary
Pro: the kit does the job well (right after installation). Control is simple, and image quality is fairly resistant to the dust particles on the camera.

Con: You will need to make your own decisions regarding mechanical and electrical integration of this camera with your car. Particularly if you do not how to find your reverse light wires, you should prepare to find this out before you make your purchase. Installation takes hours but it is full of easy decisions.

Bottom line: At the end of the day safety is all about peace of mind. I am glad VR3 can bring a cheap camera to the market so that I can enjoy my peace of mind in the suburb. If they can create a website with users sharing installation experiences it can take a lot of guesswork away.

VR3 VRBCS300W Wireless Back-Up Camera with 2.5" LCD Monitor Review

Over All Rating Reviews :
the placement of the monitor on the car dash/windshield seems to be a hit-or-miss operation for a 2.4GHZ device needing to transmit a signal no more than 8-9 feet. BTW- i do not use a bluetooth device or have aftermarket electrical accessories or a license plate cover. i tested and do not have alternator/ignition interference. i did not cut/shorten the length of the wires in case the wire length could/may add to transmission/reception, but bundled the extra length to prevent the wires from being exposed or dragged along the pavement (using the zip tie provided).

at first i tried placing the wireless camera on the lower part of my license plate and used the cig lighter power adapter for the monitor. i mounted the monitor's swivel base onto the front window - behind the rear view mirror. i installed the camera power to a 12V license plate light line (used the provided clips and covered all in electrical tape) to give me more frequent use of my investment. (this thing is not inexpensive.) i had good reception and enjoyed the wide-angle view across 3 lanes of traffic. BUT, i had to put up with very annoying horizontal lines and 1-2 second screen shutoffs at least every minute. additionally, when i'm in a covered parking garage, passing under highway bridges, or going under some (not all) overhead, city street electrical lines, there is interference.

i often wonder, which direction is this camera transmitting it's signal? are there vulnerable signal transmission points along the wiring? does the monitor need something 'extra' (like a directional antenna) to work right in a wireless mode - even at only half the distance of recommended/limited operation (9 ft. vs. 19 ft.)?

so next, i moved the camera to the top part of the license plate to shield it from "whiteouts" caused by the (not-so-harsh, but too-bright-for-the-camera) winter sunshine when the sun is over the back of my car. i like the camera placement and plan to keep it at the top of the license plate. since the monitor is now placed at eye-level at the far left side of the windshield, i hard-wired it to my interior fuse box (using the turn signal terminal) and grounded it to an unpainted, metal body section w/bolt. hard-wiring was necessary since the cig lighter power adapter cord is too short to be of any use for left-side dash monitor placement.

now i am totally frustrated because the reception is "snowy" and the horizontal lines and screen shut-offs are quite frequent. BTW-the monitor still has the freedom to move on it's stand, but re-aiming it never makes a difference.

so they got me...another 20 bucks for the "proprietary" hard-wire plugs for the monitor. what's the use of this "wireless" camera if it cannot broadcast a 2.4GHZ signal 10 feet? i'll also be interested to see if the tech support people automatically consider this post to be "solved" since i ended up buying something extra to get it to work (i hope).

Update 3/13/08 - wasted my money ($20) on the proprietary cord they sent me. it does not come with a separate power supply line, so it is basically useless! the tiny lcd monitor only has one connector, and it is for power only, not for signal transmission! inside the lcd is the receiver with a 2-inch, 16-guage wire antenna. the transmitter is a 1d foot, 18-guage wire in the camera cable and is covered by tough plastic. so, there is no easy way to use the cord to connect the transmitter to the receiver!!!! aaaahhhhhhhhh!! bad customer service to tell me that it will work!!
