Many churches have standard open-door policies in their communities, and with good reason. Churches reach out to anybody in the community who needs help, and are constantly making the building and the congregation available to do what they view as important religious and spiritual work. Unfortunately, this open-door policy can lead to unfortunate consequences, like robbery and vandalism.
When faced with the choice of closing the doors or tolerating theft, it is a difficult decision to make. Fortunately, the installation of proper security cameras and security systems can make the decision much easier. Security cameras will act as a deterrent for some, and provide crucial evidence for any crimes that do happen on the premises. As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of care.
There are many different sizes and types of security cameras. Wireless cameras are become more common, but churches may not need something as expensive as wireless cameras. The up-side of a wireless set-up is that the footage can be viewed remotely and stored on a harddrive rather than video, which means it can also be saved longer.
Place cameras at all exits and in parking lots. Do keep in mind that cameras are often attractive targets for vandals, and one way to minimize the affect of vandalism on the system is to use a combination of cameras or have back-up cameras ready and installed. Other areas to install cameras include lobbies and offices, though privacy is also a concern. Do not install cameras anywhere a person can reasonably expect to have privacy.
